Edge of Tomorrow: DVD Review
If you missed out on “Edge of Tomorrow”, the Tom Cruise sci-fi thrill ride in the theaters, now it’s your chance to watch it on Blu-Ray, DVD and On Demand. In my opinion, this was one of the best films to come out this summer. It’s filled with great action scenes, stunning special effects, and another amazing performance from my favorite actor of all time, Tom Cruise. In the film, Cruise plays Major William Cage, a cowardly war officer who is forced from the back office to the front line of a human vs. alien war in Europe. The plot then begins to play out like a military/first person shooter video game. Every time Major Cage dies on the battlefield, he repeats his day over from when he started, similar to how you restart in the game after being killed. Co-starring with Cruise is British actress Emily Blunt who has appeared in "Devil Wear's Prada", "The Adjustment Bureau", and "Looper". In this film with Cruise, Blunt plays Rita Vrataski, a tough and intelligent soldier who is used as the poster child to help with recruitment for the war. The best part of this relationship is that she’s not the love interest for Cruise. I’m glad they avoided that cliché. Since this movie was in theaters a lot has happened. The first is the money the movie brought in. The movie made over $300 million out of its $180 million budget. However by studio standards that’s not the profit they were expecting, so they wrote it off as a bomb. In fact if it wasn’t for the overseas box office the movie probably wouldn’t have broken even. It’s a shame that had to happen, but now that it’s on video, it can find a new audience and gain a cult following. The second thing that changed with the movie is the title. For reasons unknown, the movie was renamed “Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow.” They just added the tagline of the movie into the title, umm, ok. I know ‘Edge of Tomorrow” is a generic sounding title, but I don’t like the new one very much. It’s kind of clunky and a mouthful to say. I wish they stuck with the original title “All You Need Is Kill”, which is the name of the manga this movie is based on. I mean come on, who wouldn’t go see a movie called ‘All You Need Is Kill”? Sure it’s stupid, but it sound like you’re in for a great time doesn’t it? But no matter what this movie is called, it’s still and amazingly entertaining watch. Go check it today! You will want to watch it over and over and over again.
X-Men: Days of Future Past: DVD Review.
If you didn’t get a chance to see the biggest blockbuster of the summer in the theatres, don’t worry because you can watch “X-Men Days of Future Past” right now on DVD, Blu Ray, or On Demand. I have genuinely liked the “X-Men” film franchise. To me, they are fun action movies with a little hint of political and social issues to give depth to its characters. The series has had its highs (“First Class”) and lows (“The Last Stand”) and then it’s REALLY big lows (“Origins Wolverine”), but in my opinion, “Days of Future Past” is the best “X-Men” movie ever made. Everything about this movie is perfect. The action scenes are great, the visuals are terrific, and the performances are all dead on. The plot centers on Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) going back in time from 2023 to 1973 in order to stop the creation of The Sentinels, a group of mutant killing robots, before the entire mutant race is wiped out. But Wolverine can’t do this alone. He enlists the help of the younger versions of Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) to help him. Old enemies must unite and change the past in order to save the future. The story is kind of reminiscent of “The Terminator” when you break it down like that, and that’s awesome. My favorite thing about the movie is the characters, and how you just gravitate towards their situations. Whether good guys or bad guys, you really understand the motivation for their actions. Another highlight is the surprise ending. I won’t spoil it for you, but let’s just say if you didn’t like “X-Men: The Last Stand”, you are going to leave this movie with a smile. So what are you waiting for? Go give it a watch. Satisfaction is guaranteed.
